George Formby

He was, along with Gracie Fields, the biggest British star of the ‘thirties. A string of hit movies, all with the same plot: goofy George, narky boss, beautiful girl far to good for George who is won over with aid the trusty ukulele. When I’m Cleaning Windows was actually banned by the BBC.

As Martin Pugh put it, his appeal is ‘probably irrecoverable now’. And yet, here is a Frank Skinner documentary.

Frank Skinner’s Formby inspired Osama bin Laden song is worth finding too, if you don’t mind the language….
