Did the Suffragettes do it?
The popular perception of the Suffragettes – illustrated by the two videos above – is that they were responsible for women getting the vote. But the Suffragette campaign ended in 1914 when war broke out, and other factors came into play – including women’s contribution to war work. There were also other women’s organisations, such as the Primrose League within the Conservative party and the Women’s Liberal Federation. Finally, there was the role of party self-interest in 1918, when several million working class votes were added to the franchise. Is the truth less glamorous than the myth?
